History of Myrtle Desk:
In 1895 A.M. Rankin, J.P. Redding, and H.W. Frazier purchased Baker Wood Products in High Point NC. Baker made a wide variety of wood products including wagon wheel spokes, pie safes, and some residential furniture. In 1896 Redding renamed the Company Alma Furniture and began to refocus the products to residential furniture. In 1899 H.W. Frazier sold out or was bought out by Rankin and Redding sometime prior to 1899. In 1899 Frazier started up Myrtle Furniture and began to sell residential furniture, specializing in roll top desks and china closets. Alma was located at 1301 Taylor Street High Point NC.
Charles E. Hayworth Sr owned Hayworth Roll and Panel, the first plywood mill in NC. In 1921 he purchased Alma Furniture to Alma Desk and refocused the product line to office furniture to avoid conflict with customers of Hayworth Roll and Panel. In 1923 he and with W. Thomas Powell purchased Myrtle Furniture from Frazier in 1923. Frazier remained operating head the company until 1925. To avoid conflict with customers of Haworth Roll and Panel the Myrtle also moved exclusively into office furniture. The Myrtle Desk facilities were located at the corner of Taylor Street and Millis Street and at their prime had 5-6 large factories at that corner.
In 1992 the Myrtle Desk Company along with their seating facility, Clairdon Industries, was sold to Haworth Inc. Over time the remaining Myrtle products were assimilated into the Haworth product lines and the Myrtle name slowly vanished. Haworth still operates the facility on English Rd where they produce their high-end seating products. That facility is one of, if not the oldest continuously operating furniture factory in High Point having been built in 1920 and never produce any products other than wood furniture.
